Regular Cleanings & Exams Are Essential to Your Oral Health
Attending regular teeth cleanings can ensure your oral health is in order, allow concerns to be treated at the earliest possible stage, and prevent the need for expensive dental work in the future. For most patients, undergoing a professional cleaning and comprehensive exam twice per year is sufficient. However, if you have suffered from gum disease or are at high risk for other oral health issues, you might need to schedule more frequent cleanings. Dr. Brett Hester and our skilled team in Valdosta, GA, are dedicated to helping you maintain your dental health by providing thorough preventive care.
What to Expect
During your visit, you will undergo a dental cleaning followed by a comprehensive exam. For most patients, there is little to no discomfort during this process. Patients who fail to brush and floss regularly may notice some sensitivity.
During the cleaning process, our dental hygienists will remove any build-up from teeth. Patients can expect to hear some scraping as tartar is removed. Once teeth are free of tartar, they will be cleaned with a high-powered brush and gritty toothpaste. This intensive cleaning leaves the surface of teeth smooth, making it harder for plaque to heavily accumulate between visits. We will also remove as much staining as possible. However, if you suffer from severe discoloration, you may benefit from teeth whitening.
We will then floss, reaching deep between teeth and removing any residual plaque or debris. In some cases, fluoride or sealants often recommended for children, may also be applied to guard teeth against decay. At this time, we can also provide any guidance or educate you on proper technique so you can practice good oral hygiene at home.
After the cleaning, Dr. Hester will perform a comprehensive exam to assess the state of your oral health. This may include:
- Reviewing your medical history
- Evaluating teeth and gum tissue for signs of infection
- Examining biting, chewing, and swallowing functions
- Screening for oral cancer
Dr. Hester performs this thorough exam to remove risks, and he will do what needs to be done to ensure the health of each patient’s smile.
Why Are Cleanings & Exams Important?
Although you might struggle to find the time or motivation to visit the dentist regularly, having your teeth professionally cleaned every six months is an investment in your long-term oral health. While decay and other concerns can impact the health and appearance of your smile, they also affect your overall well-being. A thorough exam can help Dr. Hester pinpoint whether any warning signs or dental issues are present and plan treatment accordingly.
For most patients, undergoing a professional cleaning and comprehensive exam twice per year is sufficient.
Dental insurance typically covers preventative visits. Additionally, precautionary measures and treating conditions at the earliest stages is far less costly than extensive restorative dental work.
