A porcelain veneer is a thin but durable shell of tooth-colored porcelain that is attached to the front surface of a tooth. If you want to address chips, cracks, gaps, stains, or other minor imperfections, porcelain veneers can offer a dramatic transformation. At his Valdosta, GA, dental practice, Dr. Brett Hester can provide a set of custom veneers to give your smile a healthy, symmetrical look.
To place a veneer, Dr. Hester will begin by removing a thin layer of enamel from the teeth you wish to treat. This creates room for the veneer, which allows it to have a natural appearance.
He will then take an impression of the prepared teeth and send it to the dental laboratory. Technicians will create the porcelain veneer using medical-grade porcelain made to look like natural tooth enamel. It usually takes about two weeks to create veneers. You will receive temporary veneers during this time. When your veneers are complete, Dr. Hester will bond them to your teeth and make any final adjustments necessary to help you achieve a comfortable bite.

Your dentist must first remove a small amount of dental tissue in order for the veneer to fit properly and look natural.
Are Veneers Right for You?
Porcelain veneers can be an excellent way to treat otherwise healthy front teeth that have a compromised appearance.
Successful cosmetic dentistry treatments require a healthy smile foundation. Any active gum disease, tooth decay, or other health issues must be resolved before moving ahead with cosmetic treatment.
In addition, there must be sufficient enamel to allow for conservative preparation. Otherwise, Dr. Hester may recommend an alternative procedure such as dental bonding, which requires no removal of enamel.
Porcelain veneers can address several types of imperfections:
- Chipped, cracked, short, or otherwise malformed teeth. If these defects are severe, Dr. Hester may recommend a dental crown.
- Discolored teeth that cannot be sufficiently lightened by teeth whitening.
- Small gaps. However, severe orthodontic issues are usually best treated with Invisalign®.
Dr. Hester can determine if custom porcelain veneers or another cosmetic dentistry solution is the best way to enhance your smile.
Maintaining Your Porcelain Veneers
Caring for a porcelain veneer is no more complicated than a normal daily brushing and flossing routine. Brush twice and floss at least once daily, and be sure to attend regular checkups.
Porcelain veneers are highly durable, but they can chip or fracture. Patients are advised to avoid biting ice, chewing on fingernails, and other habits that could place excessive pressure on the veneer.
With proper care, your veneer can provide years of bright, white smiles and a lasting boost in confidence.
